Adam Booth
Individual, Couple and Family Therapy

Adam%20Booth_edited.jpg

Hi! I'm Adam.

I am a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario and a member of the Canadian Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. I obtained a Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Guelph in 2000. I work with individuals, couples and families facing a wide range of challenges and struggles that prevent people from living their lives to the fullest. I have been providing therapy to people from all walks of life for 20 years. I use a variety of therapy approaches, always with an eye to the best fit for each person, to provide the most effective support possible.

A Bit About Therapy

As we move through life, we inevitably run into issues that are difficult to navigate, such as trouble with a boss, spouse / partner, or a struggle with anxiety, depression, or stress. We try our best to solve these issues ourselves, but sometimes, no matter what we try, we can feel as if we are 'banging our head against a wall'. These times can be frustrating, tiring, and scary. At these moments, a helping hand and another perspective may be welcome.

I am aware that often challenges faced by my clients both spring out of and can be resolved through their relationships with others. I work with clients to determine approaches they can use to ask those in their lives for the changes or support they need.

I enjoy working with clients who are eager to collaborate and are willing to get to work right away on finding solutions to problems faced. I am inspired by clients' courage to reach out for support and their willingness to experiment with solutions discussed in meetings between sessions.

What to Expect In a First Session and Other "Nuts and Bolts"

We will review confidentiality, discuss what has brought you to therapy and what changes you would like to work toward. During this session I will ask you about the people who are important in your life, and the things that keep you busy (e.g. work, school, parenting and what you do for fun).

Sessions are 50 minutes in length and the fee is $140.00 (including HST), payable in session by cash, cheque (to Adam Booth) or e-transfer (to aboothcounselling@gmail.com). I will email you a receipt. You can check with your insurer to determine whether they will reimburse you for sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist or Registered Marriage and Family Therapist. If you are not covered, you can submit receipts with your income tax as a health expense.

Individual Therapy

I am aware that the issues my clients face do not spring solely out of the individual. The family the person grew up in, their partner and children, friends and extended family, as well as their work context all have a role to play. Even though there are only two of us in the room, we will explore  how these others contribute to the challenges, as well as how they might be of assistance in working toward solutions.

Couple's Therapy

As part of the couple's assessment, I meet with the couple together to determine goals, followed by individual sessions with each partner before reconvening in the 4th session. I will provide tools which often help to reduce conflict, improve communication, and improve closeness/connection. We will also look at ways to address any longstanding issues.

Family Therapy

I meet with all family members willing to attend a first meeting to determine goals. I may then meet with individuals or subsets of the family, as warranted. Meeting with subsets provides clients a chance to "speak freely" with someone outside the family system. I determine with clients what information to bring back a larger family meeting. We will also discuss the approach, or how to introduce the topics to the larger group that will be most likely to elicit a positive response.
